Homophone Hurdles: Common Writing Mistakes

Hello Masterpieces,

The Frustration of Homophones in Writing

Did you know there are 545 homophones in the English language? I've confused about 50 of them in my journey of written words. Sadly, this isn't limited to social media posts but includes my publications. Oof!

Walked in Shared Shoes

I share this path with many despite having some notable achievements under my belt. The other day, while looking through my work notes, I chuckled at my errors. A little mix-up between "break" and "brake" stood boldly on the page. While taking notes at a meeting with the words displayed on the whiteboard for all to see, I used "disgust" for "discuss." Maybe that mix-up was a Freudian Slip. 🫠

Embracing the Journey

Occasionally, a shadow of doubt whispers, "Can you succeed in the writing profession by making such elementary errors?”

But here's the thing: I embrace my journey, celebrating every step, every leap, despite the missteps. There are talented and creative souls more skilled and creative than me, terrified to share their stories for fear of embarrassment or scrutiny.

Facing the Digital World

I get it. The digital world is a critical place fueled by nastiness. People gather around to gossip, laugh, and relish over others' mishaps, mistakes, or misfortunes. You're vulnerable to hundreds of strangers and associates who may shame you for your mistakes.

Who cares? The grammar cops are usually bitter or broken people unhappy in other life areas. They get a sense of gratification from "being better" at something. Others chiming in with likes or responses only fuel their ego.

These people fail to realize that blowing out someone else candle doesn't make their light shine any brighter.

So, regardless of your writing hangups or fears, write on.

Sharing Your Story

If you are ready to share your story, be it through a blog, a book, or even a proposal, don't let the fear of missteps silence your voice. Your strength lies in your unique perspective and your unparalleled voice. Writing anyway doesn't mean writing anyway without regards for professionalism and excellence. It's persevering past the fear.

Guess What? You don't have to travel the road alone. There are resources to help you hone your craft – good friends, beta readers, alpha readers, voice-to-text technology, AI, editors, Word Tune, and Grammarly.

Overcoming Fear Of Criticism

Let's not allow the fear of criticism to hold us back. Too many people are afraid to try because others give their funky two cents. Did you catch that?😉

Your voice deserves to be heard, and your story deserves to be shared. Embrace every word, every mistake, because it's all part of our beautiful journey.
