My mother is a woman of few words, but when she speaks, her messages carry the weight of wisdom and humility, much like her own mother, my grandmother, Sarah Crook. From these remarkable women, I've learned invaluable life lessons through simple yet profound phrases that echo through my daily life.
Grandmother's Wisdom: A Lesson in Empathy
Raised in a modest home where my basic needs were always met, I was shielded from many hardships. I enjoyed extracurricular activities without the worry of basic necessities like food or clothing. However, during one incident where my cousin and I poked fun at classmates, I witnessed my grandmother's rare display of anger. Her stern words, "Today them, tomorrow you," initially puzzled me. It was much later in life that the profound truth of her words became clear. This lesson in empathy and the unpredictable turns of fate resonates deeply, reminding me that circumstances can change swiftly and often unexpectedly.
Mother's Guidance: The Path of Humility
My mother's guiding principle, "Humble is the way," frequently accompanies her stories and teachings. Drawing from biblical references ( 1 Corinthians 8:1-3),she emphasizes that while knowledge is valuable, it's love that truly builds and nurtures.
As an educator, I've often seen how implicit biases can lead to the dismissal of valuable suggestions. This can occur when assumptions are made about a younger or Black teacher's capabilities, or when the insights of an older teacher are overlooked due to perceptions of outdated methods. These judgments not only hinder individual growth but also impede the development of effective work relationships.
Embracing humility allows for a more inclusive and respectful environment, where all voices are valued equally. Indeed, 'Humble is the way'—a principle that not only fosters personal growth but also strengthens interactions and collaborations.
Living the Lessons
These phrases, "Humble is the way" and "Today them, tomorrow you," are more than just words to me—they shape my approach to life. They've taught me that humility and empathy are virtues often overlooked in our world, which frequently rewards the superficial and the ostentatious. Yet, in the quiet strength of the women in my family, I find a powerful counter-narrative.
